Brogan Rafferty was arraigned Friday morning on three counts of aggravated murder, aggravated robbery, kidnapping and other felonies for his alleged role in the Craigslist shootings case.Authorities in Noble and Summit counties have said Rafferty, a former Stow-Munroe Falls High School student who turned 17 last month, was an accomplice of an Akron man, Richard James Beasley. Prosecutors say Beasley orchestrated the slayings of three men and the attempted murder of another man last year. After Friday’s hearing before Summit County Magistrate Matthew A. Dickinson, Rafferty’s attorney, John Alexander Jr., said the 12-count indictment pertained to the Noble County portion of the case. Authorities there already had charged the teen as an adult.Alexander said Noble County officials later agreed to transfer the case to Summit County, where the teen has been held at the juvenile detention center on Dan Street since mid-January.Rafferty, wearing orange detention center pants, a white, short-sleeved T-shirt and black-framed glasses, was shackled at the wrists and ankles as three sheriff’s deputies brought him into the crowded courtroom. He made no comments in open court.Alexander told the magistrate Rafferty was entering a not-guilty plea to all charges, and the hearing ended moments later.Authorities have said previously that Beasley and Rafferty were linked to a Craigslist help-wanted ad that lured the victims to work on a nonexistent Noble County farm about 100 miles southeast of Akron.Details in the indictment stated the first count against Rafferty was for the aggravated murder of 51-year-old David M. Pauley of Virginia, on or about Oct. 23, with prior calculation and design.A conviction on any of the three murder counts, all of which have firearms specifications attached, carries a maximum sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole.Among several other charges in Rafferty’s indictment pertaining to Pauley are one count of aggravated robbery, one count of kidnapping and one count of grand theft for allegedly stealing his 1985 Dodge Ram pickup.Scott W. Davis, a former Canton resident living in South Carolina, is the second victim named in Rafferty’s indictment. The teen is charged with the attempted murder of Davis, 48, who was shot Nov. 6 but escaped with a wound to the arm.Authorities have said Davis was touring the bogus farm property with two men, suspected to be Beasley and Rafferty.Common Pleas Judge Lynne S. Callahan has been assigned to handle the case transferred from Noble County.Alexander said the other victims in the case, Ralph Geiger, 56, of Akron, and Timothy Kern, 47, of Massillon, are expected to be named when Summit County prosecutors file charges against Rafferty. Before that happens, juvenile authorities in Akron will hold a probable cause hearing to determine whether Rafferty will be tried as an adult. That hearing, expected to last three days, is scheduled to begin April 17 before Juvenile Judge Linda Tucci Teodosio.Beasley, 52, is being held without bond on multiple counts of aggravated murder with death penalty specifications.Ed Meyer can be reached at 330-996-3784 or emeyer@thebeaconjournal.com.
